Peterman’s 20 Points Not Enough as EC Falls, 71-62February 5th, 2010 Elmira, NY – The Soaring Eagles Women’s Basketball team lost a heartbreaker to the Cardinals of St. John Fisher College this afternoon, 71-62. The game was a tightly contested match-up as EC shot 38.1% from the field and St. John Fisher shot 39.3%. Each team was 33.3% from behind the three point line making tonight an evenly matched game.
The Soaring Eagles were sparked in the first half by an inspired performance from Becky Peterman ’11 (Glen Gardner, NJ -- Voorhees). The third year guard opened the half with 16 points while shooting an impressive 6-8 from the field. Colleen Maloney ’11 (Liverpool, NY -- Liverpool) kept the Cardinals ahead in the half with her scoring performance as she scored 13 points in the half.
Turnovers would be the key factor in the first half as EC would turn the ball over 11 times as compared the Fisher’s 5. Elmira would enter halftime down 31-29.
The Cardinals would control the first part of the second half as they would extend their lead to as high as 9 points. Elmira would not go away that easy as they would go on a 12-3 to go up 55-54. Unfortunately for Elmira their lead would disappear quickly as Fisher would go on an immediate 12-0 run for the next three minutes. The Soaring Eagles would claw their way back to within 5 points with 00:58 left on the clock but the defecit they built would prove to be too much as Fisher would win 71-62.
EC would finish with three players in double figures. Becca Fretz ’11 (Kunkletown, PA -- Pleasant Valley) and Tesia Kaczynski(Elmira Lady Express) ’11 (Mansfield, PA -- Mansfield) would both add 14 points. Fretz would tally a double-double as she would go on to grab 12 boards on the night. Peterman ended the game with a season high 20 points. For Fisher, Maloney and Mary Kate Comfort ’10 (Orchard Park, NY -- Orchard Park) added 20 points a piece.
Elmira will look to bounce back from today’s loss as they host RIT in EC’s home finale on Friday, February 12th at 6:00 p.m. at the Speidel Gymnasium in Elmira, NY.
